1- Make your content highly functional

A few years ago, Google released a major update to its algorithm called the RankBrain algorithm. RankBrain evaluates how Google searchers interact with your site in search results. If people like your result, Google will improve your ranking. If not, your rank will drop. From Backlinko’s SEO experience, I’ve found that Google searchers all want the same thing, actionable content.

When someone is searching for something on Google, they don’t want to read random comments from someone. They want tactics that they can use to solve their problems immediately, and if you can give them that, Google will notice and move your ranking up a few notches.

For example, when you search for the keyword “list making”, you don’t want to know why making a list can be an important topic for you. You want simple strategies that you can implement immediately. That’s why my post doesn’t have any extra words or filters. This post is just a short introduction and 17 bytes of tips that you can implement in minutes.

2- Use the OPP formula

So Brian begins his introduction with that conclusion. Now that you’ve attracted them to the result, it’s time to prove it. This is where you prove you know what you’re talking about. For example, Brian’s introduction shows people how I got over 90,000 email newsletter subscribers.

Finally, finish your introduction with a preview. It’s easy, all you have to do is show them what your content provides. For example, Brian’s preview shows the reader a fountain of the post, which makes them want to keep reading.

3- Use external links

Last year, an SEO agency in the UK experimented to see if linking to other sites would help improve Google rankings. They found that pages that consistently use external links rank better than pages that do not.

That’s why Brian always generously links to other reputable sites in his content. For example, in Brian’s list-building post, he used 16 external links, including links to reputable sites such as the Journal of Customer Research.

To be clear, I don’t think external links matter too much, but any little bit helps, especially if you want to rank for competitive keywords.

4- Use internal links

Now it’s time to create internal links that point to the pages you want to rank for. In other words, adding links from other pages of your site into your new post. These internal links send valid links to your post that can help your Google ranking.

For example, you can see that Brian has linked to his list-building post from two pages on his site that help the post he wants to rank for. In addition, the pages I am linking from are also thematically related to Brian’s link-building post. So this tells Google, “Hey, these highly related pages are all linking to the same post.” This post must be important. So it’s better to give it a better rating.”

5- Add photos, graphic images, and other multimedia

Let’s say you have two pieces of content. Let’s call them Blog Post 1 and Blog Post 2 and assume that both content is the same, with one major difference, Blog Post 1 is very ugly and Blog Post 2 uses lots of beautiful photos.

Which post works best? According to the results of many industrial researches, blog post number 2. A study conducted by the University of Sheffield, England, shows that people judge content based on its appearance first, and then evaluate the written content.

So if your content is a long wall of empty, ugly text, Google users will jump right after seeing it, but if your content contains lots of photos, charts, graphics, infographics, videos, and quizzes, they will be on your site. They read the rest and content.

For example, Brian’s post is full of screenshots, graphics, and other multimedia that make his content look beautiful. Of course, I must mention one more thing; You don’t need to get too involved and use millions of photos for each post. 6- Optimize the click rate of your title tag

As I mentioned before, Google pays a lot of attention to how people interact with your site and how they click on your site in search results. So if more people click on your site than the global average, it tells Google that people want to see this content. We have to push it to the top of the page!

This is also called organic click rate, which is an SEO ranking factor that is increasing in importance day by day. So if you’re not optimizing your site for better click-through rates, you’re missing out on a lot of organic traffic. Let’s take a look at what I did to optimize my title to increase click-through rates.

First, Brian used “how” in his title. Just started testing this and it looks like adding “how to” as your title can increase click-through rates. Brian then made sure to use a number in his title.

Several studies in various industries show that headlines that include a number get more clicks than headlines that don’t. So I made sure to use the number 2018 in my title.

7- Optimize your content for Semantic SEO

You already know that you should mention your target keyword multiple times in your content. For example, you can see that Brian mentions his keyword several times within the post. Of course, so that there is no doubt, Brian does not fill his text with keywords! He only uses his keyword a few times to let Google know what my content is about, “list building”.

To help them understand Brian’s content better, he optimizes it for Semantic Seo. This issue is not as complicated as the name suggests. Semantic SEO simply means that Google tries to understand the topic of your page, not just keywords, and to optimize the use of semantic SEO, all you have to do is use words and sentences related to the main topic in your content.

These sentences and related words help Google understand the topic of your content. For example, let’s say you wrote a post about how to be more productive and your main keyword for this post is “productivity tips”.

You search for this keyword and related keywords in Google. Then check the Searches Related To… section at the bottom of the first page. Finally, add those posts to your content, you can also use Google Suggest. Enter your keyword in the Google search bar and see what Google offers you.

In this section, add some of them to your article to help Google better understand the topic of your content. In Brian’s case, he found semantically relevant topics like “list-building techniques” and “how to build an email list” and added them to his content where it made sense.

8- Get many comments under blog posts

Do comments help you rank better on Google? Certainly. A Google employee recently said that comments can have a huge impact on content ranking. If you go to Brian’s blog post you will notice that he gets a lot of comments on his blog posts and these comments are one of the main reasons I rank for competitive keywords.

The question is, how can you get people to comment on your blog posts? In this section, I will tell you two tips that will work very well.

First of all, reply to all comments. I’m shocked every time I see someone complain that no one is commenting on their posts, because the few comments they sometimes get are ignored. So to show people I respect their opinions, Brian responds to almost every comment they post.

For example, you can see that Brian took the time to respond to all the comments left under his list-building post. This shows everyone who reads my post that I’m reading and responding to comments, which makes them more likely to comment for him as well.

Over time, Google sees that Brian’s content is not just a static page, but an active community. So it gives it a better rating. However, the hardest part is usually getting the first few comments, which brings us to the second point. Turn your conclusions into a call to action. Most people’s conclusions are boring summaries of their posts. For example, they say: “This is one of these, 6 ways for so-and-so.” A conclusion like this gives no incentive to the reader to leave a comment.

Instead, Brian suggests turning your entire conclusion into a call to action that encourages people to leave a comment. For example, today, the result of Brian’s post asks people to subscribe to his email newsletter, but he also has a call to action to leave a comment.

9- Use the click buttons to tweet

This is one of Brian’s favorite ways to get more shares and traffic on social media. I will explain in more detail how click buttons for tweets work.

The plan is that you add a series of buttons to your content that people can use to tweet specific strategies from your post. Brian’s list-making post has 17 click-to-tweet buttons. I have to mention something here; Google probably doesn’t use the amount of shares on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram as a direct ranking signal. In other words, people who share your posts on social networks do not directly contribute to your SEO.

However, social media shares can provide more traffic to your content, and the more traffic you get, the more likely you are to get a series of visitors to link to your site, and it is these links that lead to They directly affect your rank. First, find a tip, strategy, or quote in your content that’s worth sharing. For example, since Brian’s content was a list post, it seemed like all the techniques in my list would make great tweets.

Then use to create a click-to-tweet button. Tweet that you want to write and this site will give you a link that you can use. Finally, add these links to your content, you can use the buttons in your posts. You can also place these links on the text like the image below. When someone clicks one of your click-to-tweet buttons, they get a pre-written tweet that they can share that specific strategy with their followers.

Let me tell you, this method works great. Most of the tweets Brian got for the post were from people who shared them using the click-to-tweet buttons.

10- Promote and introduce your content using the content road

If you want to rank in Google today, you need to strategically promote every piece of content you publish. This is the mistake Brian was making when he started. When I started my first site years ago, I just published a bunch of content and hoped. I call this work “the solution of publication and prayer”.

At the time, he underestimated how hard it was to get people to see your published content. So he only published and then prayed. Then one day I read somewhere that WordPress websites alone publish more than 2 million posts per day.

That’s when I realized that the chances of my content standing out without any ads are about the same as winning the lottery. So I decided to introduce and promote all my content and over the past years he has implemented practical content promotion strategies that work well. One of his favorite strategies is content road shows. Thanks to this strategy, I was able to get the posts exposed to influential bloggers, who shared their posts with their audience.

First of all, find people who are interested in the topic of your post. For example, for Brian’s content, he found people who wrote about building an email list or people who shared content about it. You can find these people by searching on Google or using tools like Buzzsumo.

Then you should email these people to see if they are interested in reading your content. This is very important. Most people get very annoyed when they promote their content. Brian gets emails asking or even begging me to share individual content, which I immediately delete. Instead, I suggest using a two-step solution.

Your first email gauges how interested the person is in your content. In this way, you don’t slap a link in the other person’s face. This is a real example of this method. When the other person replies to you and says they would like to check out your content, then send them the link.

Notice that Brian does not ask to share. The purpose of the content roadshow is not to be an annoying nuisance. No one likes such a person. Instead, your goal is to get your content in front of people. Especially if these people have the power to share it. These people are not stupid, if they like your content they will share it. You don’t even need to ask. You can see that many of the people I connected with happily shared my content with their followers, resulting in hundreds of visitors who would not have otherwise seen my content.

Extra step: Update your content regularly

Backlinko used to publish a post, promote it and not come back to it, and over time realized that a lot of blog content was out of date. For example, my list-building post, had old screenshots, outdated figures, and tools that no longer exist at all. Not only was this outdated content hurting readers, but it was also bad for SEO.

That’s why I set aside a day every three months to review and update the content. Sometimes his content needs a facelift.
